Top 8 Nail Care Tips And Tricks

These days, many of us have taken nail care into our own hands (literally). The world of nail care can be confusing, any many of us aren’t sure where to start. Our nails also tell us a lot about our health, and can be a warning sign that something’s not quite right so today we’d like to share nail care tips and tricks.

Read on to find out how to take care of your hands and feet with our tips for beautiful nails and hands so that you can put your best foot (and hand) forward.

How Can I Remove SNS, Shellac Or Acrylic Nails At Home If I Can’t Get To The Salon?

Shellac or SNS

To remove Shellac or SNS nails, start by sanding off the top coat of polish using an abrasive file. Next, saturate a cotton pad with acetone and fold the cotton pad around your nail. Wrap aluminum foil around your whole finger, making sure to tightly cover the cotton pad. Put the shiny side of the aluminum foil on the inside to trap more heat and speed up the process.

Check on your nails after 10 minutes, but don’t leave the wraps on for more than 15 minutes. To remove the wraps, press down firmly to slide the wrap off of each nail. You can then remove any leftover polish with an orangewood stick or cuticle pusher.

Acrylic Nails

Acrylic nails take a bit longer to remove. If you use the wrap method, you will need to leave the foil on for 30 minutes, unwrap them, and then wrap them for another 15 minutes.

Alternatively, you can use the soak method. Put acetone in a bowl, and fill a larger bowl with warm water. Then put the bowl with acetone into the bowl with water. This will warm up the acetone, and you’ll be ready to soak.

Before you soak your nails, file down the top layer of the acrylics and apply cuticle oil to prevent your skin from drying out. Dip your nails into the acetone and cover the bowl and your hand with a towel.

Wait 30-40 minutes and then push the acrylics off of your nails with an orangewood stick. If you have enough bowls (and someone to help you), you can do both hands at a time! Here’s how to do a professional manicure at home:)

Do You Really Need A Base And Top Coat?

Together, a base and top coat both help protect your nails and seal in your manicure. While you can skip one or the other, you’re best off using both for optimal results.

A fave in our nail care tips and tricks box is applying a base coat. A base coat helps to prevent polish from staining the nails, and helps you avoid brittle nails. This is especially important for those of us who paint our nails regularly. Base coats also help to give the nail polish something to stick to by binding to both your nail and the polish. Lastly, the base coat helps fill in natural ridges in your nails, which helps make the polish appear smooth.

A top coat seals in your manicure to extend the wear and prevent chipping. A top layer also gives your manicure a nice shine, and gives it that “just left the salon” look. There are many benefits for using a nail dryer, the main reason being drying polish faster for a superior and professional finish

What Is The Best Way To Shape Nails?

There is no one size fits all nail shape that works for everyone. To determine which shape is best for you, consider your lifestyle, natural nail shape and style preferences.

For something low maintenance and easy to achieve at home, go for round nails. They’re simple but neat, and can work on both long and short nails.

Oval and almond shaped nails are both popular because they make your fingers look longer. Oval shaped nails are filed around the edges for an egg-like shape. Almond nails are similar, but they are more pointed at the top. As the name suggests, they look like almonds. A good electric nailfile makes filing nails easy.

Square and “squoval” shaped nails both give off a classy appearance. Square shaped nails are less prone to breakage than other nail shapes. Squoval (a mix between square and oval) nails have a similar shape to square nails, but with rounded edges.

If you’re looking for something bold and trendy, go for stiletto nails. A favorite among fashion influencers and celebrities, stiletto nails are for the bold. Since they’re so long, it’s best to go for gel or acrylic nails if you want a stiletto shape.

For a more toned-down version of stiletto nails, go for ballerina nails. Like stiletto nails, they are filed straight towards a squared out centre. Also called coffin nails, these are a favorite of influencers like Kylie Jenner. Learning how use an electric nail file safely can take a little practice and it’s a skill you’ll really appreciate when creating fancier manicures.

How Can You Strengthen Nails And Prevent Infection?

Our nails are a good indicator of our overall health. Healthy lifestyle habits also make for healthy nails. It’s important to eat a well-balanced diet and make sure that you’re getting enough water.

To prevent bacteria from growing under your nails, keep them clean and dry. Bacteria thrive in moist environments, so it’s a good idea to wear gloves while performing household tasks like dishwashing and cleaning. Like to know handy nail care tips and tricks for long nails?

Also make sure to trim your nails regularly, about once a week. Use a nail clipper to trim your nails, and then clean under the tips.

Try not to bite your nails or pick at your cuticles, since this can damage the nail bed. If you have a hangnail, clip it off carefully. As tempting as it is to rip it off, this can damage the skin and cause infection.

One of our fave tips for beautiful nails and hands is moisturizing. Moisturizing your fingernails and cuticles is another way to keep them healthy and strong. Try to make a habit of moisturizing them every time you put lotion on your hands. If you notice that your cuticles are especially dry, you can use cuticle oil to give them some extra care. You can also use a nail hardener to help strengthen your nails.

What Does It Mean When you Have White Marks On Your Nails?

White spots on the nails, also called leukonychia, are extremely common. The spots sometimes appear as tiny dots, and in other cases they are larger.

The most common cause of leukonychia is injury, for example if your finger got caught in a door. Since it takes a while for your nails to grow, it may take several weeks for the injury to show up.

In some cases, white spots are a result of an allergic reaction to nail products, such as nail polish or nail polish remover. Frequent use of acrylic or gel nails may also be a cause.

White marks on the toenails may also be a result of a nail fungus called white superficial onychomycosis. The infection will first show up as small white dots. The toenails then get flaky and later become thick and brittle.

White spots could also be a result of nutrient deficiencies. The most common deficiencies that lead to white spots on the nails are zinc and calcium deficiencies.

If you think that the white spots are linked to an injury, you just need to wait for them to grow out. If the spots aren’t going away or are becoming worse, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor.

How Do You Prevent Splitting And Discolouration?

Both finger and toe nail splitting and discolouration can be a result of vitamin or mineral deficiencies. Make sure that you’re eating a well-balanced diet and consider taking a multivitamin, and speak to your doctor if issues persist.

Exposure to moisture can cause nails to become brittle, which can lead to splitting. Make sure to dry your hands thoroughly after washing them, and consider using gloves while performing household tasks like washing dishes and cleaning to keep nails healthy and strengthen them.

One cause of discoloration is staining. Nail polish, particularly darker colored varnishes, can leave dyes on your nails which cause them to turn yellow. If you wear nail polish frequently, use a base coat to protect your nails from discoloration.

Nail discoloration also commonly results from fungal infection. To reduce the risk of fungal infections, be careful about nail hygiene. Research nail salons before going to make sure that they abide by hygiene guidelines and use a new manicure kit on each person

I Often Get An Ingrown Toenail. How Can I Avoid This?

Ingrown toenails happen when the side of your toenail grows into the skin. They are itchy and painful, and can get infected.

To prevent ingrown toenails, trim your nails straight across instead of curving them to follow the natural shape of your toe. Here’s how to cut toenails like a professional!

It’s also a good idea to keep your toenails at an in-between length. Try to keep them long enough to line up with the tips of your toes. If they’re too short, the pressure from your shoes may cause them to grow into the skin.

Shoes that pinch your toes can also cause ingrown toenails as well as calluses. Wear shoes that fit properly so that they don’t place excess pressure on your toes. If you find calluses are building up, you can use a callus shaver to shave off the buildup of dead skin

How Do I Make My Nails Grow Faster?

Sadly there is no scientifically proven method that guarantees your nails will grow faster. However, by taking care of your body and strengthening your nails to prevent breakage, you may be able to help them grow.

Did you know eating a good balanced range of natural foods as well as adding a supplement is part of our insider nail care tips and tricks? Just like hair, our nail health and strength reflects our diet. Taking biotin supplements may help strengthen your nails. Biotin is a type of B vitamin that is found naturally in cauliflower, nuts, mushrooms and other foods.

Nail hardeners can also help prevent nails from breaking. However, they only help in the short term. Sometimes, using nail hardeners over a long period of time makes people’s nails weaker in the long run.

Regular use of artificial nails can also cause your real nails to become weaker, which can cause them to break. Try to avoid using glue-on nails as much as possible, and go for painted nails instead. We’ve put together a list of 15 tips to stronger nails naturally here.
